Who’s Hip-Hop’s Next Underdog Success Story?Posted by Nathan S. on 03/20/13 | Filed under Top Stories, Opinion, RH Nation Answers
(From K. Dot to hanging with Lady Gaga? Now that's an underdog success story.)
You know why March Madness is the fucking greatest? Because there's nothing better than watching some school from rural Idaho knock off a top seed. Everyone loves an underdog success story, and the same applies to hip-hop.
Just a few years ago Kendrick Lamar even getting on a track with Jay-Z, let alone (at the very least) holding his own next to Hova, would have been nearly unthinkable, and yet here we are. So with the NCAA tournament about to kick off, and the "Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe (Remix)" still ringing in our ears, I thought it'd be the perfect time to ask: Who's Hip-Hop's Next Underdog Success? Who's the next guy to truly make the leap and challenge the big dogs?
For the record, I'm not talking about someone relatively unknown becoming "hot" or getting some serious "buzz" (think Danny Brown or Action Bronson a couple years ago). I'm talking someone who's suddenly standing next to hip-hop's elite, or maybe even outdoing them. Think Kendrick in the previous example, or more recently Macklemore: even a year ago he was a weird white rapper, now he'll most likely end up with one of the highest selling songs and albums of the year.
My pick? Hmmm....this is a nearly impossible question to answer accurately, which is what makes it so interesting. I can think of a few, but ultimately I'm going to go with...Yonas. That dude's one song away from a "surprise" number one hit.
Who you got?
