Daniel Powter? Try Huey. Here Are the Decade’s Real One-Hit Wonders (Video)

Posted by Nathan S. on 12/07/09 | Filed under Features, Videos

Today Billboard released their list of the decade's biggest one-hit wonders, naming Daniel Powter and his adult contemporary song "Bad Day" as the 2000s biggest one-and-done. It's not worth my time arguing about Daniel Powter, whose name I frankly didn't even know, though I will take some time to break down the decade's top hip-hop flashes in the pan. From Huey to J-Kwon and beyond, here are rap's best "where are they know?" cases.

For the record, a "one-hit wonder" is an artist who only had one song chart in the top 25, and I'll add the song has to be one you could play ten years from now and while not everyone would be able to name the artist, would definitely be able to sing along.

J-Kwon "Tipsy"

I feel like I recently heard that J-Kwon was going for a comeback. Appears it didn't really work out for him. Unless God himself intervenes, "Tipsy" will go down in hip-hop history as J-Kwon's sole contribution to the game. Oh, and as long as we're here, this video's intro is a blatant rip-off of Snoop's classic "Gin and Juice". What, you thought no one would notice J-Kwon? Think again.

Huey "Pop Lock & Drop It"

I just realized that there are back to back tracks from St. Louis. No offense intended to the good people of Missouri, I swear. Unlike some other tracks on this list I legitimately liked "Pop Lock & Drop It", but in retrospect it's got one-hit wonder written all over it. Catchy hook, huge beat, dance crazy. Poor Huey was doomed as soon as this dropped.

Shop Boyz "Party Like a Rockstar"

Back in the day I was involved in an ongoing debate with some other writers who insisted that the Shop Boyz weren't on-hit wonders but were in fact ushering in an age or rap/rock hybrids. Guess who turned out to be right? The lesson as always? Don't f**k with me.

DJ Unk "Walk It Out"

An anomaly because of it's incredibly dope Andre 3K verse, there was a time when you couldn't walk into a club or turn on your radio or tv without hearing "Walk It Out". Unfortunately it got so overplayed that people are still sick of it, but mark my words; in a couple years this will reach "nostalgia" status and DJs will start playing it in their "old-school" sets.

Mims "This Is Why I'm Hot"

This is why Mims is a one-hit wonder. And if you're saying, "Wait, Mims career isn't over. He still has another chance to make a hit!" I'd like to direct you to my commentary for "Party Like a Rockstar". Don't test me.

OK, so I can't fully disagree about J-Kwon, he had on hit and its over now. Still, one of my favorite songs is J-kwon ft Sadiyyah - You & Me.

too bad J-Kwon and DJ Unk fell off. Their hits were huge. i still like em. btw, DJ Unk had Walk It Out and 2 Step. the remixes on both songs are hits too.

As for Huey and MIMS, their names still pop up here and there. they might make comebacks. I would like to see MIMS wit a comeback, i think he has potential.

o ya, MIMS had that other song umm....... Like This. that song was sick too. I also like You And Me from J-Kwon, but that never turned into anything big.

Mims' line "it cost a guape" and the forever use of the word "guape" will remain in hip-hop.
But that song had "1 & done" written all over it.

I've heard MIMS featured on some songs that got some airplay, but I don't think he'll ever be top 25 again.
By rule of thumb, if your first single shoots to the top of the charts out nowhere... your career is doomed.
