Grading XXL’s Top 10 Freshman List

Posted by Nathan S. on 03/01/10 | Filed under Top Stories, Features, XXL Freshman

INSERT KEYWORDS
It's happened again. XXL's Freshman Class of 2009 has been released, and the interwebs are aflame with hip-hop nation fiercely debating the merits of the respective artists; but here's the thing. Like the Heisman awards (Erik Crouch? Troy Smith?), an examination of XXL's past selections reveal that while the magazine is good at generating short-term interest, they're poor at predicting future success. Just what grade does XXL deserve? Let's look back at the past year's classes and find out.

Before people start blasting me like they are XXL, these grades are not based on solely on the rapper's abilities. We're trying to figure out how good XXL is at predicting future success, so we need to measure three factors: artistic respect, national prominence and commercial success.

Grading System
A: Has achieved commercial success, everyone knows their name, widely respected.
B: Is widely respected but has yet to achieve large scale national prominence, nationally prominent but not widely respected, etc.
C: Incomplete - either hasn't released enough material to accurately judge, or has, but the response has been lukewarm.
D: Album flopped, or things just generally fell apart.
F: Gone, unheard from.

Class of 2009
XXL Freshman Cover 2010

J. Cole: B
Nipsey Hu$$le: C
Pill: C
OJ Da Juiceman: C
Wiz Khalifa: C
Big Sean: C
Fashawn: C
Freddie Gibbs: B
Jay Rock: C
Donnis: C

Most Likely to Succeed: J. Cole. Dude's got talent, and he's back by Roc Nation. There's no way Hova's letting him fail.
Most Talented: Freddie Gibbs.
Most Likely to Flop: It's an obvious pick, but OJ Da Juiceman. People love talking about him (no such thing as bad press?) but the gimmick can only last so long.

Class of 2008
XXL Freshman Class of 2008 Cover

Ace Hood - C
Curren$y - C
Kid Cudi - A
Cory Gunz - C
Mickey Factz - C
Blu - D
Wale - A minus
Charles Hamilton - D
Asher Roth - B
B.o.B. - B

Most Successful: Toss up between Cudi and Wale, with Wale the more commercially successful and Cudi hailed as a "genius" from some corner.
Most Likely to Blow in 2010: His camp's been playing the slow and steady card. So far a good move, but will it ultimately work? We'll find out soon.
Biggest Flop (so far): Blu. I really like the man's work, but he's easily the least well know out of this bunch. He's definitely got time to recover, but for now....

Class of 2007 (a.k.a. Leaders of the New School)
XXL Leaders of the New School Cover

Saigon - D
Plies - C
Rich Boy - D
Lupe Fiasco - A (plus)
Lil Boosie - C
Gorilla Zoe - D
Joell Ortiz - B
Crooked I - B
Papoose - C
Young Dro - D

Most Successful: Lupe, easily the best call XXL's made.
Most Likely to Blow in 2010: Joell Ortiz. Other than Lupe, he's the most widely respected emcee here and while he may never blow nationally, he's going just fine for himself, thank you.
Biggest Flop (so far): Um, take your fu**king pick. Saigon fell apart, Papoose failed to launch, Young Dro's faded to the background and Rich Boy is, so far, a one-hit wonder. It's as if XXL was picking a "most likely to fall short of expectations" list.

The Final Grade: C (minus)

As we can see, XXL's track record of picking the next best emcees is shaky at best. And, considering we have the most conclusive data, we have to weight the grade most heavily towards the class of 2007, a class that has to be considered, at best, disappointing. The lesson? You could spend the rest of today debating about the class of 2009, or you could just assume that half the people we're talking about today will be essentially gone by 2012. Your choice.

Okay @Nathan, I know you be having a perfect sensible logic reason behind grading Fashawn "C" BUT to me he perfectly fits in "Is widely respected but has yet to achieve large scale national prominence". Yeah there may not be many who heard "Boy Meets World", but those who heard it just LOVED it.

Basically out of curiosity, I want to know that reason, though, I already know I'll agree with "that" reason later on. Waiting for your response.

@Mr. Top Hate - I feel you, and I'm a big Fashawn fan (check my review of Boy Meets World at DJBooth.net), but right now I'd say the evidence is still inconclusive. Unlike a B.o.B. or Freddie Gibbs, he's still more of an underground phenomenon than "nationally prominent". I've got high hopes for the man, but I feel like his body of work is incomplete at this point.

Check back in a year and I'm hoping he's put out another album, done some bigger features, maybe had a song breakthrough on radio, and we're looking at a B or A.

Just my two cents.

No love for XV or K. Sparks(maybe cause hes a super senior). It's good to see Wiz Khalifa up there, I would say him and J. Cole are the most likely to succeed. I wouldn't consider Freddie Gibbs to be nationally prominent, he might be known over on the east coast, but nobody has even heard of him out here(other than on the internet). This is a quality group, but i don't see any of them really blowing up like some of the artists in past classes.

That being said, with the internet and the music industry the way it is these days, radio success doesn't necessarily equate to a successful career.
"A new breed of hustlers" is a very fitting title.

How is Plies a C? He has had three successful albums as well as a few hit singles. I know his flow isn’t the best on the list, but his albums success alone should bring him up to a B+.

Love the debate, let's keep it going. Some quick responses:

@TheBayToLA - I live in L.A. and I'm bumping Gibbs daily. He's def stronger on the east coast, but he does have a west coast following.

@alpodagod
1) Yes I'm white, and no I'm not from the burbs. Boston Public Schools baby. Not sure how that matters here considering every artist on this list other than Asher is black or latino.
2)On a national level OJ's got less respect as an emcee than any other rapper in this year's class. If I'm wrong and he's still going strong in a year feel free to write me (nathan@refinedhype.com) and rub it in.
3) Lil Boosie definitely has sales, but I also don't think he's got that widespread level of respect as a rapper, plus he's in jail for the foreseeable future. You might be right on Boosie though, maybe I should have gone with a B/B minus there.

@YoungSwish - Plies def has sales, but I literally don't know a single person who thinks he's a dope emcee. Do you? Like Boosie, maybe I should have averaged his grade out to a B/B minus.

@alpodagod Sorry, forgot the Lupe bit. Lupe's got a Grammy win, five Grammy nominations, his first album (Food & Liquor) peaked at #8 on the charts, his second album (The Cool) was #1 for nine straight weeks. Don't really think there's any question that he's the most successful artist on this list.

just wondering, since there are a few guys you gave D's to, are there guys from that class that shouldve been mentioned by XXL instead of them?
what other MCs did they miss that are likely to have more success?

My God The class Of 08 was a strong group, though it would of been stronger if Drake had been in it (as he should of been).

Ill put money on Donnis being the one that will blow up out of the new group, Diary Of A ATL Brave was a dope mixtape.

Is there a criteria for this list, because Big Sean, Jay Rock & Wiz Khalifa have been around for ages & Joell Ortiz had been in hip hop for 7 years before he made the freshman list.

B.o.B. is all but goin to get a A in the next couple of weeks, Nothing On You is in the top 30 of the Billboard Charts currently

Last Thing, how is Wale more commercially succesful then Cudi? Cudi had a top 10 hit & a top 5 album (thats almost reached a Gold Certification), while Wale struggled to get a Billboard 100 song (Chillin' charted at 99) & his album failed to make the top 20 on the billboard 200, dont get me wrongm im a fan of Wale's work, but CuDi is currently the stand out of 08's list (though Drake should of been on it)

Rich Boy didnt deserve a D either, Throw Some D's was one of the biggest hip hop tracks of the last 5 years & his album was head to toe dope. He's also been making some pretty tight tracks lately & I reckon there's a good chance he'll make another hit song here soon. B- would of been a fair rating. Saigon was also harshly rated, a C+ would of been my rating

@Aussie_Pride Great points, I'd have to agree with you on every point than Rich Boy. As you said, he had one huge single, which dropped before he got named to the XXL list, and since then he's done, well, absolutely nothing. And while Saigon's unquestionably dope, I frankly wouldn't be surprised if he never drops his debut album. Never. Until he does, I just can't go higher than a D.

personally, i would move Curren$y up to a B. This article was written a while ago, so i wont make a big deal out of it. Pilot Talk got to 39 on the billboard, and its gotten some critical acclaim. B.O.B. should be moved up to an A according to your rankings, hes a #1 album. once again, this is just an update because this was written a while ago. every1 except OJ has massive skill on the 10 list, and i think its too early to rate it. if they release solo albums most of them will be moved up to atleast a B.
