I was going to write "might", but I'll just go ahead and say it; Freddie Gibbs is the best up-and-coming rapper in the game today. With a flow that's reminiscent of a young Big Boi or Biggie and a complete refusal to touch anything soft, Gibbs has earned a prominent place my headphones for the last few months, and now I've got a new track to put on repeat: "The Ghetto". While producer Melvin L. Dinkins crafts a sonic backdrop soaked in east coast boom-bap influences, Gibbs gets on his storytelling shit, dropping bar after bar of precisely insightful lyrical destruction: "To make it out you gotta do something special / especially when we stressin these economic conditions / conditionally causin us to cook crack in the kitchen." Goddamn.
Call me a stan, but I refuse to apologize for digging dope hip-hop. Gibb's "Str8 Killa No Filla" mixtape drops soon. Keep it locked for more.
To visit the ghetto with gangster Gibbs right not check out the track below.
