I know the non-believers are getting tired of hearing me talk about
Freddie Gibbs like he's the second coming of Tupac (he's not), but I won't front - I truly think the man's the future of street rap. We haven't heard an emcee with the lyrical depth, precise flow and complete refusal to go soft in years, and his long-awaited new mixtape "
Str8 Killa No Filla" is further proof of his excellence. As we learned from Boobie Miles, a lot can happen between "heralded young talent" and "legitimate professional", but for now, he's the best of
the XXL group by a mile.
"Str8 Killa" is hosted by
Statik Selektah, features verses from
Jay Rock, Pill, Bun B, Planet Asia, Sick Jacken and more and production from
Beatnick and K-Salaam, Statik, DJ Burn One and others. It's gonna take me a minute to conclusively say if this project is better than "midwestgangstaboxframecadillacmuzik", but for now, true to its name, it's nothing but a banger.
And we only have to wait a minute for more Gangster Gibbs - his debut EP "Str8 Killa" drops August 3 via
Decon Records.
