What’s Your Favorite Feel Good Song?Posted by Nathan S. on 04/24/13 | Filed under Top Stories, Opinion, Debates, RH Nation Answers
Happiness is hip-hop's ultimate taboo. You can be relaxed, high, drunk, turnt up, swagged, poppin bottles or, in select cases, date rapey, but it's depressingly rare to hear someone rap about being happy. What's so bad about having a good time? Fuck that. For the new Question of the Week, I'm determined to find some music that just generally makes life on Earth a little bit better.
If we're being really real, last night Montell Jordan's "This Is How We Do It" came on the radio, and that shit made my night. (I don't have to explain why to my fellow 80s babies). But for these purposes, I really do want to focus on ye olde' hip-hop (as opposed to straight R&B or any other genre).
My personal picks? Hmmm....if I'm going to go old school, Souls of Mischief's "'93 Till Infinity" is a classic for a reason, as is Will Smith's "Summertime". Mos Def's "Umi Says" is a little more serious but always guaranteed to improve my mood, and I'll throw Outkast's "Elevators" into that category as well. You just can't sing that hook and stay mad.
In the end though, if I really need some music to get me right, I know I can always count on The Roots "You Got Me". And if I'm really in desperate straits, I'll up the ante and go to the live version with Jill Scott:
There, I defy you to watch that shit and not feel just a little bit better about life. So just for one post, let's put aside all the rap nerdery and toughness and partying and share some music that makes you happy.
Let's do the damn thing...
