I know there's a classic hip-hop head contingent of RefinedHype Nation that are going to lose their collective bowels over the fact that the beyond legendary DJ Premier crafted a beat for Mac "the Young, White Wiz Khalifa" Miller. Honestly, even two months ago I might have gotten worked up over "Face the Facts" too. But I'm older and wiser now.
Two things have brought me around to Mac. First, the kid can really rap. He's nowhere near an elite emcee, but he's also fucking 19-years-old. We need more teens rhyming like this, not less. Second, the (young) man's got some serious hip-hop knowledge; just check his Narduwar interview. When he says in the intro to the song, "it was my dream to work with Prem," I believe him. Never mind the "93 to Infinity" reference.
So yeah, I'm now officially a Mac Miller defender. I won't be bumping "Face the Facts" on the regular, but props to the man. Inter-generational collabs like this are how hip-hop's legacy is going to live on. Seriously - if the teens of America are playing music like this, isn't that what we want?
UPDATE: Bonus points to anyone who can name one of the samples that Prem's cutting in the hook. I definitely hear some Freddie Gibbs in there.
