Goddamnit. Just when I had vowed not to post any new
Drake material for awhile I'm confronted with the "
Light Up (Rikers Remix)", featuring an over-the-phone verse from an
imprisoned Lil Wayne. Honestly, I debated about posting this - I think we hit Drake overkill about two weeks ago - but in the end I decided this track was worth the post if for nothing more than its historical value. Think about it. We've got one of the best rappers alive (Wayne) doing a verse from jail over a track that also features one of the best rappers alive (Jay-Z) and hip-hop's bright young hope. This is a unique, unparalleled moment in hip-hop history. Take a moment to soak it in.
I know y'all have heard the first two verses eleventy billion times by now, so feel free to skip ahead to the 4:15 mark for Wayne's new addition, which is pretty damn good considering it was recorded over the phone...although, did Wayne really just compare yourself to Nelson Mandela? For the record, Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years for opposing an oppressive and racist government. Wayne's in jail for eight months for holding weed and a gun, a jail which, by the way, allows you to record rap verses over the phone. But other than that, yeah, they're totally the same.
