Two Drake features in one day? Looks like I have to admit that I'm fully caught up in Drake fever. (Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a "Degrassi" box set to watch.) As you knew it would, Drake's debut album "Thank Me Later" is seeing one track after another leak. The latest Drizzy-ness to find its way onto the interwebs is the slow jam "
July", a slow burner produced by
Noah "40" Shebib and featuring vocals from
Jhene, a singer whose biggest accomplishment before this track appears to be marrying Omarion's brother. In other words, I can guarantee you right now that this record's going to be a smash.
Not really a personal favorite, but like I said above, I can't hate on a hit. That won't stop me from talking a small amount of shit though.
The Refined Take:
1) It's hard to reconcile this "chivarly isn't dead' Drizzy with the "here, hold my gun while I throw these hundreds at these strippers" Drake we heard on "
Miss Me". He's far from the first person to pretend to be romantic to win over the female music buying demographic.
2) "Plus you met my mother, but that was an accident." How do you meet someone's mom by accident? Were they fucking in her house and she walked in? Did they run into Drake's mom at the club. I'd love to hear the story behind this one.
3) Jhene is half-Japanese, but that doesn't make her 'I'm Japanese if you please' ad-lib at the very end of the song any less strange. Has there ever been an awkward ending to a song that's otherwise on point? It's like a date where everything goes great, and then when you lean in to kiss her at the end of the night she throws up on you.
