"What kind of bird is that Drake?" "I don't know Ross." "Can I eat it?"
Over the weekend boy wonder Drake went on a song self-leaking spree, a spree we're wrapping up into our "
Block of Drake". While on the surface "Free Spirit", Drizzy's collaboration with Rick Ross the Wingstop Boss, sounds pretty shallow and obvious, it actually yields some very important lessons. For example:
1) On a purely theoretical level I should dislike this song. It's the same Drake alternating-between-money-swagger-and-emo-loneliness-sing-the-hook formula he uses over and over and over again. I should be tired of it, and for the most part I am, but I can't help but secretly enjoy "Free Spirit". What can I say - he and 40 (the producer) just have this chemistry that at the very least results in a head-nodder.
2) Rick Ross is a lot better than people want to admit. He'll never be the lyrical emcee the heads want him to be, but he manages to give even the most shallow verses a sense of depth and seriousness. I almost can't believe I'm writing this, but Ross has....soul. Is there really any other word?
3) And last but not least, ladies (or guys), don't tat Drake's name on you. That's a horrible, horrible idea. The sad thing is that I feel obligated to ever write this, but I guarantee that at the next Drake concert we'll see no shortage of groupies and groupie wannabes with Drake's name inked on them. The only fun part will be finding the chick with "Audrey Graham" tattooed on the small of her back.
For the record, this doesn't mean I won't completely eviscerate the next Drizzy song, but for the moment, right now, all I've got it "goddamnit, I actually kind of like this."
