If I had asked (um, myself?) this question even two months ago, after we had just heard "Sucka 4 Love", the answer would have been a resounding "no fucking way". It's now been five years since DMX has made an album and in that period he's been in and out of prison more times than T.I. Hip-hop is a "what have you done lately" game and, especially when you burn out in such spectacular fashion, that kind of a layoff means death for more careers, but maybe, just maybe, DMX can get something going again.
Now I don't think he'll ever regain number one album status, in fact I'd be willing to lay money down on it, but after a solid performance at last night's BET Awards and a new track, 'It's Over the Dog is Back" that's perfectly solid, we might be talking about Earl Simmons as a force in the rap game once again before too long. Of course that means he's going to have to stay out of jail and/or sober, no easy task, but for the first time in a long time I'm beginning to believe it maybe, just maybe, could happen.
Danielle Update: The freestyle is classic DMX and that's all that really matters. He's bringing his usual aggression and even the beat sounds reminiscent of throwback DMX. Let's just hope he can keep himself out jail long enough to release some consistently good material.
