(Editor's Note: "Cover Art" is a new series looking at the best new...well...it should be pretty self-explanatory....covers.)
Labyrinth, a London based indie artist, and self-proclaimed music geek, recently released a cover of Chris Brown’s “Beautiful People”. And, right from the beginning, he melodically distances his version from the original.
As an alternative to the pulsating, gradually swelling, techno intro to Chris Brown’s version, Labyrinth opens with a quiet, more relaxed approach, using simple piano chords. In fact, the techno sound is stripped altogether in this version. Instead, Labyrinth uses an extremely impressive band. While creating a cover isn’t usually about comparisons to the original, this cover definitely works, because it is much more varied, musically. With soothing violin breaks and screaming guitar solos, Labyrinth succeeds at creating a cover that is as enjoyable as the original.
Cover is under the original for compare and contrast purposes.
