Last week, music-publishing giant
Broadcast Music, Incorporated hosted an intimate Q&A session for aspiring artists, producers and songwriters alike. This 2-hour long lecture-style discussion, gave inquiring minds a personal and in-depth look inside the life of the multi-talented singer/songwriter known as
Claude Kelly. Responsible for penning some of the most popular songs you hear on the radio today, the lyrical wordsmith has worked with many artists including
Britney Spears [“Circus”],
Bruno Mars [“Grenade”],
Fantasia [“Bittersweet”] and the late
Michael Jackson [“Hold My Hand”]. Organized by Broadcast Music, Incorporated’s Ian Holder and Wardell Malloy, fans were given valuable information about the business aspect as well as the creative aspect of the music industry. Topics included publishing, the elements of creating a hit song, and the importance of building relationships.
Fans also had the opportunity to ask for advice on how to get song placements in order to jumpstart their careers. According to Kelly, not only does a hit song need a melody that sticks in the listeners head in addition to a catchy hook, but “a song is not done until its on the radio”.
When asked: “what’s the best way to get your name out there as an upcoming artist”? Wardell Malloy stated that it is necessary to attend various networking events because “your relationships equal revenue”. Kelly also mentioned that the Internet served as a great marketing tool because “It’s much easier [to get your music heard] now because of Myspace, or YouTube. Music executives are always listening.”
Some highlights of the night included when he broke down the stories behind some of his biggest hits. The most interesting tidbits:
Michael Jackson’s 'new' single "Hold My Hand" was originally written for
Whitney Houston four years ago; and labels passed on
Miley Cyrus' "Party in the USA," which was originally recorded by British newcomer Jessie J.
So what’s the secret behind his success? He tends to go with his first instinct on everything. No matter how crazy his ideas may be. And the creative process behind penning those hits: “I draw from each artists’ experiences and personal story. Sometimes it’s how the artist is feeling that day. Be opened minded, it has to be about that artist.”
So to all you aspiring artists out there…perfect your craft; get out to promote your brand, never underestimate your talent and network with different people every chance you get…Because you never know who you may cross paths with.
