Chali 2na, otherwise known as that dude with the crazy deep voice who was in Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli, just dropped the video for his single "International" ft. Beenie Man and the visuals are crazy. Set in the ghettos of Kingston, Jamaica, "International" is not only an great look inside a world most Americans never see, it's got some of the craziest visuals I've seen since Hype Williams started dropping those fish-eyed lens joints back in the day. Check it out:
The Refined Take
1) Seriously, what is that effect they're using that makes it look 3-D-esque? If this was "Friday" Ice Cube would be watching and saying, "Am I tripping? Am I tripping." The he'd go pour some water over his cereal.
2) Although he has yet to break through the mainstream, anyone who's even remotely interested in underground hip-hop should immediately recognize 2na. That man may just have the most distinctive voice in hip-hop: it's like if James Earl Jones had an ill cadenced flow.
3) The visuals on the video and crazy, and the song's pretty damn dope, but I'm loving this video because it also gives us an inside look at a Jamaica we rarely see. Coverage of Jamaica almost always hits one of two extremes: (A) Jamaica is an island paradise, you should go there and sip some iced cocktails on the beach; or (B) Jamaica is a horrible slum, don't travel there or you'll die. "International" shows us ordinary Jamaicans in their everyday lives, and for that reason alone it's a must watch.
