I wasn't thinking about XV specifically when I wrote that, but I could have been. While I don't pretend to know the specifics of his situation, at the very least the last year seems to have followed an increasingly familiar pattern. Unsigned rapper builds a deep fan base by constantly releasing new material > major label wants in on the action >>> rapper signs to a major, celebrates! Eagerly awaits major moves >>> rapper slowly realizes that the label doesn't particularly care and isn't going to do anything for them >>> goes back to releasing music on their own, just like when they were unsigned.
XV signed to Warner Bros. almost a year ago following years on the indie grind. For a few months immediately afterwards we didn't hear much at all from VIzzy, and then about two months ago we started to once again get a steady onslaught of new music. There are some bigger names attached (Just Blaze, Trae the Truth), but for the most part it's the same music he was always making (which is to say dope).
So in many ways Vizzy's back to square one (subtle pun intended). He's going to have to go right back to building buzz and a larger fan base before WB will make him a priority and really start pushing him. Here's to the man continuing to push and making it.
New XV material - the "Witchita" video and "Batteries" ft. Trae - are below. Enjoy...and get caught the fuck up.
