The Good, the Bad & the Ugly: The Best & Worst Super Bowl Commercials

Posted by Danielle Harling on 02/08/10 | Filed under Features, Super Bowl

Now that the New Orleans Saints have clenched victory at the 44th annual Super Bowl it’s time to talk about the best part of last nights game and that is the commercials. Dorito’s reigned supreme yet again and although commercials only last anywhere between 30 seconds and one minute there were quite a few that left a lot to be desired. RefinedHype.com takes a look at the three best and the three worst commercials that were featured during the 2010 Super Bowl.

The Good

Dorito’s FTW

One of the funniest commercials from last night was easily the Dorito’s commercial that featured a man being slapped and then scolded by his date’s toddler son. And the Dorito’s coffin hoax commercial was also good for a few laughs.

Google Keeps It Simple

It may have taken a few seconds for people to actually get where this commercial was headed, but it turned out to be one of the nights most creative commercials. Google proves yet again that simple can be extremely effective.

Punch Buggy!

What more could you ask for in a commercial? This Volkswagen commercial featured a favorite American past time (the Punch Buggy game), comedic violence, and the legendary Stevie Wonder.

The Bad

The Bettie White Bomb

This Super Bowl commercial is a classic example of a commercial that could have been a lot funnier. It started out funny, but then Bettie White turned into a man and a man tackling someone isn’t nearly as funny as a “Golden Girl” doing it.

Taco Bell And Athletes DON’T Mix

Apparently fast-food chain Taco Bell must have a thing for putting sports most renowned athletes in corny commercials. After dressing up boxer Evander Holyfield as a woman in their last commercial, Taco Bell had the nerve to feature former basketball star Charles Barkley singing/rapping (not sure which one) along to a song about their “NBA $5 Buck Box.”

When Star Power Fails

Combine three of the biggest names in television and what do you get? A pretty lousy commercial featuring Jay Leno, David Letterman, and Oprah Winfrey. With this much star power they could have pulled off quite an amazing commercial, but ironically they did the opposite.
